Sunday Dinner Conversations

Every once in a while, everyone - all 6 of us plus one - surprisingly are at home for a meal. Last Sunday was one of those lucky days, Mitch was home for spring break, Alli came home to do laundry and she brought home the "plus one" (we hadn't seen Kyle for quite a while since he's been busy doing his internship at an accounting firm, and if you didn't know it ... it's tax time.) I decided to celebrate everything good about the day and cook "like there's no tomorrow". We had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, salad, hot bread from the oven w/ jelly & butter, and Texas Sheet Cake for dessert.



We all sat down to eat, Kevin prayed for the mashed potatoes, and then the fun began! It began quite humorously, at Kevin's expense, when he reported seeing a "flock" of deer on his way to a friends house. The family was un-forgiving on that one! A flock, really? Did they fly? The loving and responsible parents of the family, gracefully steered the conversation toward other "flocks" ... A Pastor takes care of his "flock", we are like a "flock of sheep" (they don't fly). So maybe Kevin wasn't too far off?

Then the discussion turned quickly to important matters at hand ... the big national anthem debate happening at both schools. Does it really change who we are and what's in our hearts? Environmental issues that don't quite sit well with big brother and his big red truck. Actually, others in this household would also tend to "humph" at the concept of Climate Change. We all pretty much liked the movie Ice Age, and isn't that kind of what we're talking about here? So you get the idea ... important stuff to college kids, a high school kid, and one middle school kid. And in the midst of it all are the ever-influential parents, trying our best to be peace-makers in disagreements, affirming the wonderful people our kids are becoming while forming their own ideals & values.

After years of dealing with high-chairs, bibs, ordering for your kids, telling them to keep their feet off the table, "eat your veggies", and feeling like those days are never going to end, there is something so satisfying about having some grown-up conversation with your kids.

I didn't write this post to open up discussion on the above-mentioned topics. Please refrain! I was simply conveying to my readers a huge *sigh* that Sunday was a good day, filled with good food, laughter, and conversation!
